Patterings~How God uses every day happenings to draw my attention to Himself, and to teach me spiritual lessons.

Profile Information

Tell us a little about yourself.
I have been married to my wonderful husband for 19 years, and we have 5 children, who are, naturally, also wonderful. (Ok, usually wonderful!) Since we home school, my time is spent at home with them, giving me opportunities to do some writing in the margins of my life.
What is your favorite Bible Verse?
"The Lord turned to him and said, 'Go in the strength you have...Am I not sending you?"
Judges 6:14
What is your favorite book?
LoL--only one? Current favorites: Sisterchicks
What is your favorite homemaking task? Why?
Probably cleaning my bathroom or washing windows--it's some of my best thinking time!
Share your testimony with us.
I was saved when I was almost 5. Mom & I were on our way to VBS, where she was teaching and we had been talking about salvation--when I told her I wanted to pray and ask Jesus to forgive me and be my Savior, she pulled the car over to the side of the narrow Maine road and prayed with me.

When I was 12, my family moved to Ecuador, as missionaries, and I went to an MK school there until I graduated from high school. It was there that my faith became truly my own. I was living hours away from my parents and I learned that I could cling to Jesus. Through my high school years and my bout with Guillan Barre, my faith and my walk with Christ deepened. Even though I lived in Ecuador for only 6 years, those years shaped me into the person I've become--right down to seeing life differently than the average American.

Before the Rain

It's a dark and cloudy day, not just outside, but in my soul, too. I'm tired and discouraged with my short comings. I feel as though I haven't been able to keep up with anything in life right now.

I find myself looking up at heavy clouds and crying out, “Please, Lord, rain on me! Shower me with Your life-giving rain. Renew me with Your showers of blessings that I might once again dance in the rain.”

As I stand there looking up at the rain-laden clouds, with my hands outstretched in supplicatio… Continue

Got Holes?

We've been working at the state fair this past week and, to keep things simple, I'm in charge of the money. I like to keep some change handy in my pocket so I don't have to pull out the money bag all the time. Early in the week I wore a pair of jeans that had a hole in the pocket, the pocket that I keep the money in. It wasn't too big of a deal since the hole was barely big enough for my thumb to fit in and we didn't have to worry about coins for change. I didn't give it much thought until someo… Continue

A Tiger Doth Make

Fiction for Friday...

Matt hadn’t been eavesdropping; there was just no way he could help overhearing the ladies at a lunch table behind him. They were young, working mothers and they were talking about all the demands placed on them and how they felt about it. What he heard shocked him. Did Katie feel the same way even though she was a stay-at-home-mom? He jotted down some notes as the ladies behind him thoughtfully finished their conversation with things they wished their husbands would do fo… Continue

Like a Lake

The other morning I was making an early run to the airport. The sky was light, but it was still pretty dark on the highway. It didn't help that the trees were close to the road and the pavement was new.

After awhile the road seemed to broaden as we crossed a lake. Not only did the trees fall away, but suddenly it was lighter even though the sky was the same. What was the difference? The lake. Instead of absorbing and blocking the light from the sky, it reflected it.

This is something I've been… Continue

Hi Patty,
Thanks for your wonderful writing - God has bless you with a great talent. On the patterings website you have is there a place for children's stories? I have begun to write and illustrate childrens stories for 3 to 7 year olds and would like to make them available to other mums. They are all based on biblical values, verses etc. Let me know if I could be of use. Also are you published, if so - any tips - good publisher/literary agent et. Any advice would be great. God bless.

Hi Patty - what a wonderful Christmas tree!! Well, Christmas was magic. My daughter (aged 27!!) threw a whirlie because I had decided to go and spend Christmas with friends. Naturally, I cancelled with my friends and decorated the house - for my daughter - also called Patty(and did the meal) with all the love I could. My daughter cried she was so touched. But how about you?Are things going wonderfully? Looking forward to the New Year? This year I hope to be very loving, very positive (no whining!!!) and wish you blessings and love (even to that old husband of yours!!!) and a cricket bat for when things get tough! Love from Belgium - Bev

Hi Patty, sorry I deleted you from my friends. I didn't see that you responded, and I'm sad to say that I was in the mood to clean house...cut the baggage that didn't encourage my walk with Christ. Please forgive me and I hope we can still be friends if not...hopefully in time I will gain your trust again. Sincerely...
